Baobab Sponsors Nursery School in South Africa

(PRWEB) December 12, 2007 -- Baobab Travel, the ecotourism specialists (www.baobabtravel.com), will sponsor a nursery school in a South African township starting in 2008. The Dalukhanyo Preschool, which currently takes around 65 youngsters between the ages of two and four, is in the Langa township near Cape Town. Baobab Travel will donate 1% of all booking fees to a trust fund that will help Dalukhanyo buy much-needed equipment.

Langa is South Africa's oldest township. When it was built, it was seen as a model of urban planning. Nowadays Langa's 200,000 residents suffer high rates of unemployment and one of the highest levels of HIV/AIDS incidence in South Africa. Langa also has a large population of single mothers who need somewhere safe to leave their children while they work.

Dalukhanyo (the name means 'to bring light' in Xhosa) is one of the few nursery schools in Langa. Nevertheless, it is poorly funded. Mothers pay just £15 per child per month, but the facilities are minimal. The building is not much more than a shell; there are no mattresses or beds for the children to take a nap, outside play equipment is broken and unsafe. The children do get two meals a day, but the nutritional value is low. Many children spend an entire day at Dalukhanyo from 7.30am to 5.00pm.

Baobab Travel's interest in Langa and Dalukhanyo stems from its love of South Africa. Baobab takes tourists in small numbers to the real Africa - the one that tourists rarely see. A Baobab tour takes in the townships, the rural villages and the huge expanses of empty wilderness. This is small-scale ecotourism at its best, helping to support fragile communities and vanishing ecosystems.

Baobab also takes ecotourists to the less-frequented corners of Egypt, Jordan, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zambia. A Baobab tour is as much an adventure as a voyage of discovery. It gives tourists a chance to try their hand at scuba diving or mountain trekking in the great unspoilt places of Africa.

Commercialisation of Higher Education in South Africa
Introduction and Literature ReviewSouth African education policies place priority on addressing historical education imbalances, but should also be sensitive to the demands of an ever-increasing global knowledge-driven environment. The educational system cannot be dominated by the needs of the domestic educational system of South Africa ignoring the trends exerted by the global world (OEDC Annual Report, 2004:44).

Higher Education as Service Trade Exporter In South Africa
IntroductionWhilst it is recognized that South Africa is still in a process of transition regarding higher education to address the imbalances of the past, it should also be emphasized that Institutions of Higher Education in large are still underplaying the importance of higher education as commercialized commodity in the global world. This resulted in a low commercial higher education presence in the global world, a limited capability to attract quality students from foreign countries and a national oriented education approach.
